The Diocese of Islands and Inlets is presenting a second 7-week course, from February to March 2023, designed to equip lay leaders. The course will provide the skills and resources for laity to lead worship services, Morning and Evening Prayer and the Liturgy of the Word (a church service without the Eucharist). At the end of the course, successful participants will be licensed by the bishop as Lay Ministers.

Course description: The seven sessions will equip lay leaders to:

  • Understand the purpose of liturgy
  • Follow the lectionary and examine its purpose in worship/liturgical formation
  • Understand our Anglican, geographical, social and historical context
  • Become familiar with the broad principals and structure of the BCP and the BAS
  • Pray creatively and prepare intercessory prayers
  • Access the available liturgical, lectionary, prayer and sermon resources needed to plan and lead a worship service

Dates and location: Via Zoom on Wednesdays from 7pm-9pm
February 1, 8, 15, (no class on Ash Wednesday); March 1, 8, 15, 22

Cost: Free; participants must purchase their own copies of the required reading.

Required reading: The Liturgical Year: the spiraling adventure of the spiritual life by Joan Chittister (2009), from the Ancient Practices Series.

Qualifications: All those wishing to lead the Liturgy of the Word must have a valid Police Information Check (with Vulnerable Persons Sector check) and have completed Safe Church training within the last five years. Participants must begin the course with these two qualifications in place but must maintain these pieces to be licensed by the bishop.

Applications: Please apply via this form. The deadline for submitting applications is December 1, 2022. The demand for this course is very high and applications will be considered based on the needs of the parish, lay leadership experience, proof of Safe Church and a Police Check, and commitment.

Instructors: In partnership with Bishop Anna Greenwood-Lee, course design and content was developed by The Rev. Canon Donna Joy (Diocese of Rupert's Land) and The Rev. Sr. Ingrid Andersen (incumbent, Church of the Advent).

The course will be facilitated by The Rev. Sr. Ingrid Anderson, with guest presentations from clergy and lay leaders of the diocese. An Anglican priest for eighteen years in post-apartheid South Africa, Ingrid has a Master of Adult Education and is engaged in her Doctor of Adult Education studies at Penn State University. Her research focus is on building the capacity of lay and ordained church leadership to respond appropriately to parish teaching and learning needs. She has developed and taught courses in church growth, small group/home church lay leadership and lay worship skills training for the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania.
