Religious in-person gatherings and worship services during COVID-19 Pandemic

This message is to inform you regarding services in churches, synagogues, mosques, gurdwaras, temples, and other places of worship during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

You may be aware that on November 20th, Provincial Health Officer Dr Bonnie Henry ordered additional precautions to be taken as we all work to decrease COVID-19 transmission around the province.

This a reminder that Religious in-person gatherings and worship services are temporarily suspended as per the Gatherings and Events Order from the Office of the Provincial Health Officer (OPHO). This Order is currently in effect until December 7, 2020 at midnight. At that time, it will be reviewed.

Members of the public can still visit your place of worship for individual activities such as contemplation or prayer.  Religious services can continue using remote or virtual attendance options, like Zoom or Skype.

We recognize your concerns as guidance continues to evolve. To remain current as guidance and requirements change, please visit the BC Province wide Restrictions page at .

Please connect with your local Health Protection & Environmental Services (HPES) office if you have any questions.   Individual offices can be found here:

Thank you for your hard work and dedication in keeping our communities safe, healthy and sanitary.   Sincerely, Health Protection & Environmental Services Island Health
